Hi everyone,

I'd like to invite you to ProtoMU's Open Beta.

I'm the solo developer behind ProtoMU, and I've put a lot of time into the project. The work has gone well beyond setting up server files and changing a few configs: I've been fixing client bugs, reworking progression and drops, improving the launcher and website, and adding custom features. I want that effort to come through when you play.

I enjoy this era of MU: building your character, finding your next piece of equipment, hunting bosses and competing in events. That's what I'm building ProtoMU around, while making the everyday experience smoother and giving players clearer information about how the server works.

The server currently runs in Sofia, Bulgaria. I'll do my best to keep it available consistently, but maintenance, power cuts or internet interruptions may occasionally cause downtime. I want to be open about that from the beginning, especially during Open Beta.

The basics

  • Version: Classic 97d + 99i
  • Classes: Dark Wizard, Dark Knight, Elf and Magic Gladiator, with the classic class upgrades
  • Base EXP: 150x at 0–19 resets, 140x at 20–24 resets, and 100x from 25 resets onward, before VIP and event bonuses
  • Maximum level: 400
  • Maximum stats: 32,767
  • Maximum equipment level: +11
  • Starting allowance: 500 stat points and 1,000,000 Zen
  • Resets: Level 400 normally, or 350 with active VIP. Normal resets retain allocated stats, equipment and learned skills
  • Grand Resets: Available at 30 resets, with stat-point and credit rewards. Full requirements and fees are on the website

Custom drops and a reason to keep hunting

I've put particular attention into what drops, where it drops and how it fits into progression.

  • Five ordinary equipment tiers, based on monster level. Early monsters provide early-game sets; stronger monsters unlock later equipment tiers.
  • 10% Luck chance on ordinary monster equipment. Boss and event rewards use their own settings.
  • Adjusted item and Zen drops. Ordinary monsters can drop equipment, Zen or nothing, with larger Zen amounts from higher-level monsters. Rates vary by monster and reward source.
  • Tiered Kundun +1 to +5 rewards, with +0 equipment and weighted excellent-option rolls. Larger excellent-option counts are progressively rarer.
  • Defined medal rewards: Silver Medals give non-excellent +0 to +6 equipment with Luck; Golden Medals give +6 to +9 equipment with Luck.
  • Excellent accessories have specific sources, including designated quests and Kundun +4.
  • Custom Sea Worm rewards, including custom equipment and rare wings.
There is also a 15-stage custom quest chain, covering monster hunts and collection objectives. Rewards include jewels, Kundun boxes, excellent accessories, Zen and a Blue Feather. Quest progress continues through resets and Grand Resets.

The Server Info page covers equipment progression, box rewards, crafting rates, reset costs and quest requirements.

A launcher with its own updater

Open Play ProtoMU.exe and the built-in updater checks for new client releases, downloads the changed files and installs them before you play.

The launcher also includes:

  • Optional, experimental Vulkan / 60 FPS rendering, with a graphics compatibility check and standard OpenGL available.
  • F11 windowed / borderless fullscreen switching.
  • F12 hide-to-tray and restore.
  • 3D cam control with scroll wheel. F7 to return back to normal view.
  • Support for 4 game windows.
  • Improved window restoration and focus handling.
The 60 FPS mode is an experimental option for compatible hardware; performance depends on your PC and settings. Classic gameplay timing is retained.

Client fixes and custom equipment

Some of the work has gone into features you can see immediately; some has gone into correcting the numbers and behaviour underneath them.

  • Agility / attack-speed overflow correction for high-stat characters.
  • HP overflow handling and corrected health displays, including the HP orb, numerical values, tooltips and respawn refresh.
  • Green, black and purple Dinorant variants, integrated with matching mount visuals and horn items.
  • Wings of Conqueror, Conqueror Steel and Elysium, with corrected appearance and equipping support.
  • Equipment glow, model and mount-rendering corrections.
  • Expanded camera controls and clearer windowed text.
  • A grouped M-key travel menu, bringing the travel destinations into one place.
  • A readable English Blood Castle pre-start message and reduced Invisibility Cloak prices.

Your ranking shows above your character

The top three places in Player Kills, Devil Square and Blood Castle each have custom in-game emblems: red for first, gold for second and silver for third.

These nine emblems have a 3D appearance and gently bob above your character. Their size and alignment have been adjusted to look consistent in-game.

Only one ranking emblem is displayed at a time. If you qualify in several categories, your highest qualifying personal total determines which emblem appears. Exact ties share a ranking place.

Player kills are recorded separately from the PK penalty. You can still use /pkclear to clear your penalty while keeping your recorded ranking kills. Those kills also appear in the website rankings.

Events and rewards

  • Blood Castle: Souls and Zen for the successful Archangel weapon return, scaling by bracket.
  • Devil Square: Zen completion rewards, plus medals or Kundun boxes for first place, depending on the bracket.
  • Golden invasions: Box of Luck and tiered Kundun rewards from the corresponding golden monsters.
  • Sky Event: Excellent equipment, a winner credit bonus and a chance of rare custom wings.
  • Happy Hour, Party Bonus, Lucky Jewels and Lucky Mixes: Scheduled bonuses for experience, drops or upgrading.
Current schedules, entry requirements and prize details are on Events & Rewards, with live countdowns on the website.

Join the Open Beta

ProtoMU is playable now and still being actively developed. I'm maintaining the project myself, and the website keeps the current settings, rankings and development news in one place.

My intention is to keep beta characters and items for the official launch, provided everything goes well.

You're welcome to join, build a character and take part in the first competitions.

Development Update | 14 October 2026

Hi everyone,

Over the last few days, I’ve been working on more practical farming spots, cleaning up unwanted drops and tracking down a couple of frustrating client bugs. There’s also been substantial progress on the Android prototype.

Tighter farming spots

I’ve reorganized 44 existing monster groups across three maps:

  • Dungeon: 13 farming spots
  • Atlans: 19 farming spots
  • Tarkan: 12 farming spots
The groups now spawn within smaller areas and wander less while idle. The aim is to make farming more comfortable, with less running after scattered monsters.

These changes reorganize the existing populations; they don’t simply fill the maps with extra monsters.

Drop and shop cleanup

Devil’s Eye, Devil’s Key, Scroll of Archangel and Blood Bone no longer drop from monsters.

This removes invitation materials that are no longer needed for the server’s current setup, as the invitations are sold in Lumen the Barmaid.

Client fixes

The broken description beneath Jewel of Creation and the text shown 1min before Blood Castle begins have been corrected to readable English.

Two further client corrections are prepared for publishing:

  • /questinfo sometimes giving no reply: I traced this to the client’s repeated-chat and cooldown filters blocking the command before it reached the server. The correction lets the quest-information command through those filters, including when used shortly after accepting another quest.
  • The unstable Create Character screen: I traced the jumping background and disappearing preview to the portrait camera affecting subsequent scene draws in 60 FPS mode. A targeted correction is prepared to restore the scene camera after drawing the portrait. Final visual confirmation is still pending.

Website improvements

The ranking tables now accommodate complete character names without awkwardly splitting them across lines.

The PK, Devil Square and Blood Castle emblems also appear in the website rankings, making the connection between your standing and your in-game badge clearer.

Successful registration now ends with the confirmation message, instead of presenting an empty registration form again.

Android development

The native Android prototype now connects to the same server, supports character entry, movement and casting, and has been tested on a Galaxy Z Fold4.

As a very big side project, I've been focused on bringing over the original PC models, equipment, monsters, NPCs, terrain textures and animations. Touch controls include a joystick, skill buttons, separate health and mana potion buttons, and camera gestures.

I’m also working through inventory, equipment, warehouse, shop and map-travel behaviour. It remains a development prototype, with much more work needed before it can offer the complete PC experience.

Thanks for following ProtoMU as it develops. The latest client downloads, server information and rankings are at:
